Series AA 31/04 comprises Black's notebooks on various topics related to anthropology, archaeology and medicine, and his collection of published and unpublished books, reports and papers, newspaper cuttings and other reference materials.

The following notebooks are included in this item:

  1. Notebook 1: Notes on Native American burial practices, extracted from historical and ethnographic sources.
  2. Notebook 2: Notes on Central American civilizations, extracted from historical and ethnographic sources.
  3. Notebook 3: Notes on spinal physiology from medical books, and notes on Aboriginal detribalization extracted from a 1937 paper by Daniel Sutherland Davidson (AA 68).
  4. Notebook 4: Notes on the medical condition known as 'boomerang leg', extracted from medical, historical and ethnographic sources.
  5. Notebook 5: Notes on bejel, yaws and syphilis, extracted from medical and historical sources.

This item includes three volumes of newspaper clippings, and some loose clippings:

  1. newspaper and magazine clippings (pasted into 1935 diary, labelled on spine 'Anthropology') relating mainly to Australian Aboriginal people (1938-1971), previously accessioned as AA 31 F2.
  2. newspaper and magazine clippings (pasted into 1938 diary, labelled on spine 'Cuttings') relating mainly to South Australian and Australian exploration (c. 1935-1970).
  3. newspaper and magazine clippings (pasted into 1940 diary, labelled on spine 'Railway maps') relating to overseas railways (1942-1953).
  4. Loose newspaper clippings on Aboriginal anthropology and archaeology, foreign ethnography, Australian history and politics. The newspaper cuttings include detailed accounts by EB Dow of Aboriginal rock art and stone arrangements in the Broken Hill district published in The Barrier Miner on 10 December 1938 and an article by Robert Edwards (see AA 83) on canoe trees, published in The Chronicle on 17 February 1966.

This item includes published papers, articles and pamphlets by other authors relating mainly to Aboriginal anthropology and archaeology and Australian history. The series includes a large collection of pamphlets on aspects of South Australian history published by the Pioneers' Association of South Australia and some reprints of articles from the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (SA Branch), as well as two editions (1938-1941) of The Aborigines Protector (the official organ of the Association for the Protection of Native Races).
