This series comprises linguistic data recorded by Daisy Bates and is divided into 2 sub-series:

AA23/4/1 comprises four Aboriginal vocabularies recorded by Bates at Eucla and Ooldea.

AA23/4/2 consists of four copies of an Aboriginal wordbook issued by the Western Australian Government in 1904.

'Miscellaneous words and sentences, Central Australian Dialect'

 

This sub-series consists of a manuscript (15 foolscap pages) copied by Prof. JA Fitzherbert, Classics Department, University of Adelaide, from an original manuscript provided by Daisy Bates entitled 'Miscellaneous Words and Sentences, Central Australian Dialect'. As well as general vocabulary items, the manuscript includes the names of many important watersources in the Great Victoria Desert, including Wandunya (Waldana), Wilbanina, Warrdarrgana (Boundary Dam), Thalliri (Talleringa) and Winbera (Wynbring).

This manuscript was evidently copied by Fitzherbert from a typed copy held by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). The Daisy Bates manuscript collection in the Barr-Smith Library at the University of Adelaide, includes some correspondence with Fitzherbert relating to this vocabulary. There is additional correspondence between Bates and Fitzherbert in the Bates Collection in the Australian National Library, Canberra.

'Central Australian Dialect'

 

This sub-series consists of a manuscript (five foolscap pages) copied by Prof. JA Fitzherbert, Classics Department, University of Adelaide, from an original manuscript provided by Daisy Bates entitled 'Central Australian Dialect'. The vocabulary items are divided into two sections; 'Man, his relationships etc' and 'Parts and functions of the body'.

This manuscript was evidently copied by Fitzherbert from a typed copy held by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). The Daisy Bates manuscript collection in the Barr-Smith Library at the University of Adelaide, includes some correspondence with Fitzherbert relating to this vocabulary. 'Vocabulary of Central Australian Tribes'

 

This sub-series consists of a manuscript (eight foolscap pages) copied by Prof. JA Fitzherbert, Classics Department, University of Adelaide, from an original manuscript provided by Daisy Bates entitled 'Vocabulary of Central Australian Tribes'. The vocabulary items are divided into four sections, 'Vegetable foods', 'Man, his relationships etc', 'Parts and functions of the body' and 'Animals'. Bates also lists the names of some of the tribal groups she became familiar with during her stay at Ooldea, including the 'Wongaii Wonga' from the Boundary Dam area, 'Jiwin Wongga' (from the Ooldea area), the 'Wanbiri' or 'Wanmaring Wongga' (from the Great Australian Bight), the 'Bijanjarra' (Pitjantjatjara), the 'Yanggunjarra' (Yankunytjatjara) and the Wirongu Wonga (from the Tarcoola area).

This manuscript was evidently copied by Fitzherbert from a typed copy held by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). 'Eucla area Vocabularies'

 

This sub-series consists of a manuscript (eight foolscap pages) copied by Prof. JA Fitzherbert, Classics Department, University of Adelaide, from an original manuscript provided by Daisy Bates entitled 'Eucla area Vocabularies'. The vocabulary items are divided into two sections, 'Man, his relationships etc', 'Parts and functions of the body', 'Animals', 'Birds', 'Reptiles', 'Elements', 'Short sentences' and 'Miscellaneous'. Bates advised Fitzherbert on 5 April 1932 that the vocabulary had been collected from a woman named Gauera from the area north of Eucla, and from a man, Bijarda, from the area west of Eucla

'Native Vocabulary. Etc'

 

This sub-series consists of four copies of a booklet 'Native Vocabulary etc' issued by the Western Australian Government in 1904. This booklet lists English words in the categories of 'Man, his relationships etc', 'Parts and functions of the body', flora, fauna, natural phenomena and other subjects. The booklet was evidently issued to settlers, police officers and other white people who were requested to obtain the Aboriginal terms and insert them in the appropriate place in the book. Bates has inserted a few Aboriginal words into one of these booklets but the other three are blank.
