Description

This series consists of documentation relating to tjuringas and other secret/sacred objects (and some weapons, utensils and stone artefacts) donated by Daisy Bates to the South Australian Museum. The documentation includes Bates' original hand-written notes and labels which provide details of the provenance and totemic associations of the tjuringas, and NB Tindale's transcriptions of those labels. This series has been divided into 5 subseries.

AA23/3/1 comprises notes by Bates relating to the tjuringas she obtained for the South Australian Museum and the labels she attached to the tjuringas.

AA23/3/2 consists of handwritten notes relating to tjuringas, extracted from AA23/3/1.

AA23/3/3 consists of typescript notes by Bates entitled 'Inma or tjuringas from Ooldea'.

AA23/3/4 consists of lists of objects received from Daisy Bates.

AA23/3/5 consists of a manuscript list of 'Reduced Tulas'.

This sub-series consists of hand-written notes by Daisy Bates relating to tjuringas and other secret/sacred objects that she obtained at Ooldea and subsequently donated to the South Australian Museum. The notes are written on scraps of brown or white paper, apparently used by Bates to wrap the objects when they were sent to the Museum.

This series includes references to the following regions of South Australia: Nullarbor - Great Victoria Desert; North West.

This sub-series comprises handwritten notes relating to tjuringas and other secret/sacred objects donated to the South Australian Museum by Daisy Bates. The information in these notes was evidently transcribed from AA23/3/1 by Museum staff and subsequently annotated by NB Tindale (see AA 338).

'Inma or tjuringas from Ooldea'

This sub-series comprises a typescript copy of notes by Daisy Bates on 'Inma or tjuringas from Ooldea', dated 7 July 1932, plus one copy annotated by Tindale. In these notes Bates provides some details of the tjuringas and other objects she has obtained at Ooldea, and discusses cannibalism at Ooldea, the alleged murder of a white man by Aboriginal people near Kalgoorlie and the movements of Aboriginal people into Ooldea from the desert country to the north. This item was originally accessioned as AA23/2/2.

This sub-series consists of a manuscript by Bates entitled 'Contents of 2 packets' evidently listing the objects she sent to the South Australian Museum fon 17-18 June 1932, plus other manuscript notes by Bates relating to tjuringas from Ooldea. Some of these notes have been annotated by Tindale. This item was originally accessioned as AA23/3/2/4-7.
