Description

This series comprises 69 black and white (b/w) photographic prints, eight of which are copies. The photographs in this series have been published in Aborigines' Friends' Association publications, but appear to have come from various sources. They show a range of subjects including missionaries, Australian Aboriginal people on missions or pastoral stations, portraits and group photographs. The photographs include some well known individuals including Doug Nicholls and Albert Namatjira (see AA 229). The photographs were taken by a range of photographers.

The prints are of varying size and format. Many have original annotations written on the reverse and some also have printers' instructions. All place names and proper names from the annotations and captions have been indexed. Note that some items show unidentified people and places The prints are stored unmounted in a binder titled 'AA 1 Aborigines' Friends' Association (AFA) Photographic Prints, Album 1 of 4', which also holds series AA 1/4 and part of AA 1/5.

Some of these prints also appear in the Marjorie A Angas (see AA 676/5) album of photographic blocks in a numbered series. These photographs are also published in the Australian Aborigines by Rev. JH Sexton who was President of the Aborigines' Friends' Association, South Australia Branch. The entire photographic block sequence is not represented in this collection. It also appears that the photographic blocks represent illustrative material for other publications, for example the Harrie Green (AA 113) sequence from AA 1/3/5 to AA 1/3/8. For photo block numbers 202, 204, 205 and 213, see series AA 1/4.

This series was arranged and described by South Australian Museum archivist Kay L Mead in 1980. In her listing she recorded captions for the photographs from the publication Australian Aborigines. The edition of Australian Aborigines from which the captions were copied has not been located but the captions have been retained in the inventory for each photograph in the 'Details' field. All of the annotations and ink stamps found on the prints have also been listed in the 'Details' field.

The series was part of Acc. No. 86.
